It is easy to let the other activities and chores in your life control your meeting attendance. Remember that part of your sobriety involves taking control of every aspect of your life.

You will come up with every reason to either be late or simply not attend alcoholic anonymous meetings. You have to work late. You have to pick up the kids. You have to do laundry. While all of these may be true, you also have to stick to your alcoholic anonymous meeting schedule. If you do not follow your schedule, you are setting yourself up for a significant setback

While work, kids, and laundry are important, so are you. Take care of yourself before you do anything else. Right now, part of that self care is your attendance and participation in alcoholic anonymous meetings. If you are like most recovering alcoholics, you are likely to be uncomfortable during your initial meetings. This is not uncommon. Do not expect something unreasonable of yourself. Accept how you feel. If you do not, you will begin to skip the meetings altogether.

The meetings are designed to help you as you maintain your sobriety. The meetings are anonymous so that you eventually feel comfortable sharing your feelings. The group helps you deal with everyday issues that impact your sobriety. This is all the more reason to plan your life around your meetings, not the other way around.

It is not difficult to organize your daily activities so that you can attend your alcoholics annonymous meetings. You will find that your friends and family members are available to help out. Let your neighbor pick up the kids. Your sister can help with the laundry. Participation in your alcoholic anonymous meeting schedule will help you on the job. If you need to attend alcoholisc annonymous meetings during your work day, talk to your boss.

Not comfortable with your supervisor? Ask your human resources department if they have an Employee Assistance Program. EAPs are designed to assist employees with difficult personal issues that negatively impact their work productivity and attendance. The EAP can assist you with coordinating your alcoholic anonymous meeting schedule and your work schedule.

Planning your daily activities around your alcoholic anonymous meeting schedule is absolutely critical to your ongoing sobriety and general well-being. You must do everything you can to help yourself. The first and most important step is to consistently attend your AA meetings.

Family members and friends of alcoholics and addicts often desperately search for help and answers to their problems.

I worked as a family therapist at a private neuro-psychiatric hospital with the significant others of alcoholics, addicts, compulsive gamblers, and dual diagnosis patients.Like most treatment centers and rehabs, participation in our family program was mandatory for visitation.

Symptoms of alcohol abuse
Always having a reason to drink: Most people drink simply because they feel like doing so. When somebody always has a specific reason, then you can just as well look for other signs of alcohol abuse as well.

Hiding your drinking habit from others: Many alcoholics don’t want to show their habit publically, especially not to people the love and respect. So they might wait until their spouses go to sleep, start to take frequent ?walks? during the day (which actually means to go to the liquor store) etc.

Addiction: When Gambling Becomes a Problem
While most people enjoy casino gambling, sports betting, lottery and bingo playing for the fun and excitement it provides, others may experience gambling as an addictive and distractive habit. Statistics show that while 85 percent of the adult population in the US enjoys some type of gambling every year, between 2 and 3 percent of will develop a gambling problem and 1 percent of them are diagnosed as pathological gamblers.

Getting help is as easy as finding an alcoholic anonymous meeting schedule. You can find more information at Alcoholism Help Online.

Drinking Alcohol is a serious health issue and affects almost everyone in one way or another, so this article will help guide you towards a guaranteed method of quitting this forsaken addiction.

If you feel that this subject may affect you or somebody you know, then please read on with an open mind as you could be one step away from changing your or somebody else’s life.

Alcoholism can only be treated after the addiction to alcohol is dealt with. The medical profession regard alcoholism as being a disease and it is determined as being a physical or mental condition which has a negative affect on the human body. The worst of which is death, although other conditions include discomfort, dysfunction, irregular behaviour, syndromes and distress.

On the whole, as the disease’s name would suggest, alcoholism will do everything possible to make the patient continue consuming alcohol. You can compare the craving to alcohol with our basic need for water, and it’s so strong that not even a worsening health pattern will stop the patient from drinking. Through pure frustration, the patient will become more defiant and aggressive as the withdrawal symptoms kick in. It won’t be long though before vital organ damage takes the stage and then death will follow shortly.

An alcoholism cure is not far away as you begin to feel guilty for every time you have a drink. You won’t fall any lower when you start off the day drinking and in larger quantities, just to forget about wanting to give up. This is the point when you must pick yourself up and start to get medical help to cure alcoholism. There is help for alcoholics.

Screening and Diagnosis: Quite often the signs of alcoholism can be confused with those of old age, for example memory loss, dyspepsia, pain and weakness. A medic will have to complete his diagnosis by performing a screen test and a short questionnaire.

Withdrawal Symptoms: An alcoholic has a daily quota of drinks like a routine, and if you deny him alcohol at any of these times, then he will suffer from withdrawal symptoms such as head aches, nausea, pains, and other such symptoms. When this is happening, it should be quite east to recognise, either by the alcoholic or somebody close although is it always hard to know how to help an alcoholic.

Blood Alcohol Tests: Such tests are important for discovering what level of alcohol consumption we are dealing with at a particular point of time. This test can give some insight into how serious the problem is, but it doesn’t indicate any problem that may have arisen due to long term alcohol consumption.

Testing the kidneys, liver and for reduced testosterone levels (in men) will help to determine just how deep alcohol has got into damaging our general health. Tests are also carried out on the red blood cells in seeing how much larger they have become, this being another serious symptom of alcoholism. Doctors will also test for "carbohydrate-deficient transferring" also know to be a symptom of excessive alcohol consumption.

Treatment: Alcoholics are so steadfast in their addiction that they will always deny that any health problem be related to their alcohol consumption habit. You may ask why and it’s quite simple, they will put up with anything in order to carry on with their daily fix. That is why it is so important that close family and friends be so vigilant and then insist on starting a treatment program. The actual treatment depends on the individual but it will either consist of an outpatient program or a residential inpatient treatment.

Evaluating the Level of Dependence: Counselling is the ideal method to really find out the real level of alcohol dependency as the existence of alcohol craving is a real one. Once we have established this level, an alcohol reduction plan will be drawn up in order to smooth out the body’s negative effects.

Intervention by Specialists: This is the time when help really begins as specialised alcohol addiction doctors establish the finer details of a specific treatment strategy. This includes counselling with various treatments such as prevention therapy, relative behaviour therapy, dealing with being paranoid and beliefs that cause psychological stress, learning how to put mind over matter, learning how to deal with traumatic experiences, behavioural modification techniques, and getting to grips with self-help manuals. Once all this is under way, then the time has come for follow-up care in a treatment center.

Residential Alcoholism Cure: Once you have admitted to yourself that alcohol has dominated your life, just cutting back may indeed have a negative effect. The first thing to do is to join a residential treatment program which touches on subjects such as an alcoholism cure, individual and group therapies, abstinence, participating in help for alcoholics groups, educational chats on curing alcoholism and many more.

Alcohol comes into direct contact with the mouth, throat, esophagus, stomach and intestines as well as being absorbed into the bloodstream. Alcohol sickness can begin as headaches, feeling nauseated, sore throat or indigestion. However, if alcohol abuse continues, these and other alcohol and health symptoms can develop into more serious illnesses and diseases.

Here are examples of short term health effects of alcoholism and disease on the body:

Nausea, Vomiting, Dizziness, Hangovers – excessive alcohol consumption can result in the body trying to protect itself by getting rid of the alcohol and vomiting. Alcohol and health and the central nervous system are related since alcohol affects a person’s sense of balance and orientation, leading to a feeling of nausea and/or dizziness. Hangovers are partly due to the body’s dehydration caused by alcohol consumption, and hangover effects of alcohol on the body may be felt a few hours after consuming alcohol.

Loss of Muscle Control – slurred speech is one of the effects of alcohol on the body. Impaired judgement and poor coordination are alcohol and health effects that can lead to falls and accidents.

Adverse Interactions with Medications – alcohol is known to interact negatively with at least 100 medications. For example, antihistamines taken with alcohol can increase the drowsiness that this medication by itself can cause. Large doses of the painkiller acetaminophen taken together when consuming alcohol increases the risk of liver damage.

Pregnancy Risks – alcohol can cause numerous birth defects, the most serious being fetal alcohol syndrome. Babies born with fetal alcohol syndrome will have physical abnormalities, mental impairment and problems with behavior. To avoid negative alcohol and health effects during pregnancy, do not drink alcohol during pregnancy as no one knows exactly how much alcohol causes birth defects.

Because alcohol and health effects can involve many organs in the body, long-term heavy drinking puts you at risk for developing serious health conditions and illnesses.

Here are examples of long term effects of alcoholism on the body:

Liver Inflammation and Cirrhosis of the Liver – liver inflammation symptoms include abnormal yellowing of the skin, eyeballs and urine, fever and abdominal pain. And in the case of cirrhosis, as many as one in five heavy drinkers will develop cirrhosis of the liver. Alcohol is especially harmful to the liver since the liver is needed to metabolize alcohol. Alcohol destroys liver cells, and it destroys the ability of the liver to regenerate new cells.

Cancer – long term heavy drinkers increase their risk for certain forms of cancer such as cancer of the mouth, throat and esophagus and colon.

Heart disease – long term heavy drinking increases a person’s risk for developing high blood pressure and heart disease.

Pancreaitis – long term heavy drinking can result in developing inflammation of the pancreas, called pancreaitis. The pancreas are needed for food digestion, and pancreaitis symptoms include severe abdominal pain and weight loss. Pancreaitis can be life-threatening.

Additional long term negative alcohol and health effects on the body include damage to the brain, alcoholic dementia, nerve damage, bleeding in the esophagus, erectile dysfunction in men, insomnia and depression.

Drunk driving or driving under influence is the prime cause of motor vehicle crash cases which often lead to deaths and serious injuries. Some quick facts about Drunk Driving... Alcohol is a hypnotic sedative and nervous system suppressive. Addiction to alcoholism has become a major social problem. Driving under influence of alcohol has become one of the common feature and cause of accidents today. As per studies carried out by NHTSA in 2006, Alcohol-related motor vehicle accidents under influence of alcohol kill someone every 31 minutes and injure someone every two minutes in US alone. Have a look at the revealing statistics by another study held in US in 2006. Every year, in the U.S., about 600,000 and 10 percent – of all motor vehicle crashes recorded by police department are due to consumption of alcohol. Nearly 40% Americans are involved in an alcohol-related motor vehicle crash in their lifetime. In Illinois during 2005, 56,680 people were arrested for DUI (Driving under Influence) which results into losing the driving privileges. by 90 percent of these people. The ratio of lethal accidents in Illinois that are alcohol-related is roughly four times greater at night than during the day. In US, Nationally, each year, about 748,000 people suffer injuries in alcohol-related traffic crashes, an average of one person injured every minute. About 40,000 of these are severely affected. More than half of the 414 child passengers ages 14 and younger who died in alcohol-related crashes during 2005 were riding with the drinking driver (NHTSA 2006). In 2005, nearly 1.4 million drivers were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol or narcotics (Department of Justice 2005). That’s less than one percent of the 159 million self-reported episodes of alcohol-impaired driving among U.S. adults each year (Quinlan et al. 2005). Each year, crashes related to alcohol ingestion in the United States cost about $73 billion. In 2005,in US, 48 children age 14 years and younger who were killed as pedestrians or pedal cyclists were hit by drivers under influence Groups at Risks The percentage of male drivers involved in serious vehicle crashes is almost double than their female counterparts who have been recorded at a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of 0.08% or greater It is against the law to drive with a BAC of 0.08% or higher in most of the countries. At all BAC levels youths are more vulnerable to accidents compared with adult ones. Young men under the legal drinking age (18 to 20) are found driving while impaired due to ingestion of alcohol more frequently than any other age group. Studies have shown that heavier drinkers usually prefer to drink at bars and other person’s homes, and at multiple locations requiring shorter distances to cover after consumption Young drivers have been found to prefer drinking at private parties, while older, more educated drivers prefer bars and taverns. Beer is the drink of choice in most cases of heavy drinking, binge drinking, drunk driving and underage drinking Safety Belts and Alcohol Approximately 12.8 percent of fatally injured intoxicated drivers used Safety belts as compared to 33 percent of sober drivers kill in crashes. The percentage of drivers using safety belts involved in serious crashes who have been impaired is at significantly lower rate than sober drivers Blood Alcohol Content (BAC) Measurement of concentration of alcohol in blood provides a common, standard platform to measure and compare the levels of intoxication. Alcohol Regulation Laws differ in their limits from one state to another. While in United States, 0.10% level is considered the legal limit for safe driving for common carriers and 0.04% BAC is considered for aviators; countries like Russia, Norway, Poland, Sweden permits the level of 20 mg/deciliter, while countries like Australia, Argentina permits 0.05% level of BAC. In India the legally permissible limit is 40 mg/deciliter, while. Countries like Saudi Arabia, Malaysia, Romania, and Czech Republic have completely banned this. The effect of alcohol absorption is gradual and it depends upon the rate at which one becomes drunk. As a person drinks faster than the alcohol can be eliminated, more the drug accumulates in the body, which results in higher and increased levels of alcohol in the blood. Preventive Measures Effective measures to prevent injuries and deaths from impaired driving include: Uncompromisingly implement of existing BAC laws, minimum legal drinking age laws, and zero tolerance laws for drivers younger than 21 years old. Implementing compulsory blood alcohol testing when traffic crashes result in injury (National Committee on Injury Prevention and Control 1989). Immediate suspension of the driver’s licenses of people who drive while intoxicated. Introduction of Sobriety checkpoints. Introduction of Health promotion efforts which can employ an ecological framework to power economic, organizational, policy, and community action Life is precious.

It may surprise you to know that college and university campuses are scenes to more than just socializing and learning. All too often, they can also be the scenes of a crime.

Awareness of this problem has grown dramatically over the last twenty years, and many institutions are taking appropriate measures to protect their students from malice. Wise parents do not close their eyes to these issues, but discuss them openly with their students. When choosing schools for their sons or daughters, they consider the security programs and features utilized by the schools. You must do all you can to ensure that your student doesn’t get an education they didn’t plan for.

Drugs and Alcohol

Nine out of ten student felonies involve alcohol or drugs. Annually, 1,700 college students die from alcohol-related causes. On their own for the first time, students often feel a surge of independence that can lead to poor decision-making, such as binge drinking. There are many resources available to help parents discuss substance use with their young adult children.

Meanwhile, when choosing a school favor institutions with strict policies regarding alcohol and drug abuse, and effective parent-notification. In this way, colleges and universities keep better control of this problem.

Sexual Offenses

Unfortunately, 25% of undergraduate women nationally will be victims of an attempted or completed sexual assault. Many schools have embraced innovative technological solutions in an effort to protect their students. Residence halls that use electronic key-card systems are superior to the ones still using old-fashioned metal locks, and most commons areas of dormitories are now outfitted with video surveillance.

At the very least, residence halls should be monitored, and nighttime access should be limited to residents only. Room doors should be equipped with peep holes and dead bolts. Bathrooms are safer when restricted to floor residents. For peace of mind, you may see if single-sex and ’substance-free’ dormitories are available. Crime is lower in these halls.

Another important deterrent against sexual predators is awareness. Your student should study the campus and neighborhood with respect to routes between his or her residence and classes/activities schedule. Parking lots should be adequately secured, lit and patrolled.

Many campuses offer emergency phones, escort services, and shuttle systems so that students should never have to compromise their safety by walking across campus alone after dark. These are free services that have dramatically decreased crime.

Theft

College students are often the target of fraudulent identity-theft and credit card schemes. Make sure your student is savvy about personal information. They should never leave bill payments, credit card offers, health insurance statements, or any personal mail lying around.

Instruct them never to give personal information over the phone to any company unless they initiated the call, and they know the company is reputable. Caution students not to give out their social security numbers to obtain credit cards or memberships, and to keep a personal record of all such cards, with expiration dates and company phone numbers in a locked drawer or cabinet.

PIN numbers should not be kept in wallets, and should never incorporate birthdates, social security numbers, telephone numbers or addresses.

The Jeanne Clery Act is a federal law that was signed into effect in 1990, requiring colleges and universities to disclose annual information about campus crime and security policies. It is your privilege and right to know these statistics.

This law was passed at a great cost. In 1987 Jeanne Clery was raped and murdered in her dorm room by a student with whom she was unacquainted, who had passed through three propped open doors in order to rob dormitory rooms. Knowing they could never bring their daughter back, Mr. and Mrs. Clery demanded safer campuses for future students. More advice regarding security on campus can be found on their outreach site at www.campussafety.org.

Is the complexity of preventing underage drinking and other drug use overwhelming the capacities of Independent Schools? During 2004, 20% of 8th graders and 60.3% of 12th graders got drunk at least once according to the National Institute of Drug Abuse (NIDA).

Of the 10.7 million underage youth who drink, 7.2 million or 31% of all high school students binge drink at least once a month. And 21.5% of eighth graders and 51.1 of twelfth graders had tried illicit drugs. Harder to capture in these survey results are the many related issues that alcohol misuse and other drugs foster for teens: motor vehicle crashes, personal injury, sexual assault, teen pregnancy, vandalism, and impaired intellectual and social development.

Alcohol is far more pervasive than illicit drugs among teens. According to NIDA, alcohol kills six times more teens than all illicit drugs combined. Federal spending on the ‘War on Drugs’ has increased from $1.65 billion in 1982 to $17.9 billion in 1999. Despite these massive increases, more than half of high school students have tried an illegal drug before they graduate. Additionally, 65% have tried cigarettes and 35% are current smokers. It is time to try another approach.

‘After years of implementing programs, seminars, bringing in speakers, and redesigning our wellness curricula several times, I do not feel that we have made any progress in curbing the drinking culture at our school.’ This statement from a Head of School captures the frustration that can overwhelm a community trying to address underage drinking and other drug use.

School-based prevention activities are necessary, but they are not enough to address the complexity of underage drinking and other drug use. Adolescents’ lives extend beyond the walls of classrooms and manicured lawns of campus.

Adolescents interact in their communities, consume our media culture replete with pro-drinking and pro-drug using messages, and are members of complex peer and family systems where issues of belongingness and connectedness are crucial.

A school-based prevention program can account for only some of the risk factors that influence an adolescent’s decision to drink or use other drugs. For this reason, school-based programs will always be limited. No single program component can prevent multiple high-risk behaviors. Rather, a set of coordinated, collaborative strategies and programs is required in each school community.

An integrated approach is necessary to impact the confluence of risk factors contributing to underage drinking and other drug use. Multi-component strategies that include two or more strategies together such as family and student programs or school prevention activities and community initiatives will have a greater impact on adolescent high-risk behavior.

Prevention programs for substance abuse are in place at almost every school in the United States. On average, schools provide 14 prevention activities, and 90% of public schools provide some information on alcohol, tobacco, drugs, and risky sexual behavior. However, prevention is more than programs. Prevention is both policy and attitude – one without the other usually causes a degree of institutional pathology.

Schools that set aside the old thinking such as ‘We need a new program’ or ‘Let’s bring in a speaker!’ and embrace a more ecological model that says, ‘What portfolio of activities and initiatives work well together?’ will experience greater success in curbing underage drinking and other drug use.

A prevention strategy that consists of developmentally appropriate classroom education, peer-led education, faculty education and training that empowers faculty to recognize substance abuse in students and intervene, local law enforcement and parent groups that meet regularly to discuss underage drinking, school-based policies that provide the opportunity for referral and early-intervention, and parent discussion groups that meet to discuss and share effective parent strategies and receive training on how to be more effective communicators with their children will be a powerful force.

Compare this approach to one that is predominately student-based, fragmented and not logically linked or grounded in theory.

Real change will occur when schools and communities recognize that the prevention is more than packaged programs, slogans, ceremonies, and events. We have to change our basic goals, content, and process of education at all levels and in all areas. Developing the knowledge, understanding, and the skills necessary to avoid underage drinking and other drug use must become as much part of what it means to provide a ‘good’ education as literacy in reading, math, science or other traditional academic areas.

What is needed is an integrated approach linking prevention activities into a comprehensive preventative net involving all the stakeholders in a community. An Ethiopian proverb says, ‘When spider webs are woven together, they can tie up a lion.’

While many independent schools have wellness programs, many more should be developing them. We have been throwing kids into the alcohol-fueled environment of college life with little preparation other than middle school health classes and what they’ve picked up on their own during high school.

Prevention programs need to continue to support and validate those students who choose to delay their drinking and abstain from other drugs. Programs need to help students develop effective communication skills to express concern to friends who may be experiencing problems with drinking and drug use and to connect those students to school-based and community-based care givers.

Prevention programs need to offer suggestions to students to minimize the risks associated with drinking and drug use while simultaneously communicating that use equals risk. Prevention programs need to offer suggestions to students to minimize the risks associated with drinking and drug-use while simultaneously communicating that use equals risk.

We don’t need to catch more kids, but to connect with more kids. We don’t need to make examples of students but be examples for students.

Teenage Drinking
Alcohol consumption has always been associated with various types of risks and dangers. Not only is there is a risk of a drinker turning into an alcoholic.

I was shocked to learn that two-thirds of teenagers who drink report that they can buy their own alcoholic beverages.

Moderate drinking with friends does not indicate a problem. But drinking alone indicates a need for alcohol. Drinking in isolation is one of the most significant warning signs of alcoholism.

Lying about drinking is another important sign. Feeling guilty can make the person to lie about the amount of alcohol consumed. It is observed that increased alcohol consumption and lying about it go hand in hand.

Increased toleration for alcoholism also indicates alcoholism. If you need more alcohol to become inebriated, then you are likely to establish your dependency. Thus you tend to increase your dose daily.

If a person is seen to be staying at the bar longer and drinking more than others, it indicates alcoholism.

If a person considers everyday as a bad day or an occasion and demands alcohol, it indicates that the person has become alcoholic. He/she just looks for any excuses to drink.

One of the most common signs of alcoholism is that a person is unable to perform any function without having an alcohol. Alcoholic person just becomes restless, if he/she doesn’t get a drink.

Has the thought of alcohol poisoning been troubling you, want to know all you can about it? Here are the signs and treatments of alcohol poisoning.

Ask every teen (above 18) and those in their 20s, and they will tell you the main reason they go to bars or clubs is because they want to drink and have a good time? But how good a time are you having when you are throwing up or can’t remember how it happened? This is a sign of drinking too much alcohol, more than your body can tolerate.

You need to be aware of what you are getting into when consuming alcohol, its fine that you want to have a good time, but what are the risks involved? I’m sure most of us have heard of alcohol poisoning. Alcohol poisoning is a serious and often fatal condition that results from drinking way too much alcohol.

The body absorbs alcohol, but when there are extreme amounts of alcohol in the body, it directly affects the central nervous system. This could result in slow breathing, sluggish heart rate and can lead to choking, a comatose state or death.

So how does alcohol poisoning occur? One of the reasons is drinking too much alcohol is too short a span and even due mixing different alcoholic beverages together (everyone who drinks should know never to mix drinks).

Most people go on a sort of drinking binge and end up with alcohol poisoning. But alcohol poisoning doesn’t only occur by drinking alcohol, it can even occur by ingesting household products that contain ethyl alcohol, isopropyl alcohol and methyl alcohol. Any person with alcohol poisoning needs immediate medical care and should in no situation be left alone for any amount of time.

But how do you know if a person is suffering from alcohol poisoning?

Signs and Symptoms of Alcohol Poisoning
Here are the signs and symptoms of alcohol poisoning:

A state of stupor or confusion and disorientation.

Excessive vomiting.

Sudden seizures.

Breathing is slow or irregular.

Skin has become ghastly pale or blue-tinged.

Shivering as a sign of low body temperature or hypothermia.

Becoming unconscious.

Treatment of Alcohol Poisoning
The fastest method of getting treatment for alcohol poisoning is to get medical care for that person. This is the first step in treatment. If you notice any one with any of the symptoms mentioned, you need to call the emergency number in your area (like 911 in America).

You will most probably be put in touch with the poison center that will guide you on what needs to be done. One of the things they will tell you is to not leave the unconscious person alone and not try to make them vomit, as there are chances of choking. Treatment will typically include:

Monitoring the person carefully.

Protecting the airway to allow for regular breathing and to prevent choking.

Oxygen therapy.

Giving the person fluids through a vein to avoid dehydration (especially when the person is unconscious.

In case of methanol ingestion, dialysis on the kidney will be done to get the alcohol out of the system as soon as possible. Dialysis is also part of the treatment for isopropyl alcohol poisoning.
