If the "cure" for alcoholism is to quit drinking, I did that, and without AA.

"One recent study found that 80% of all alcoholics who recover for a year or more do so on their own, some after being unsuccessfully treated. When a group of these self-treated alcoholics was interviewed, 57% said they simply decided that alcohol was bad for them. Twenty-nine percent said health problems, frightening experiences, accidents, or blackouts persuaded them to quit. Others used such phrases as "Things were building up" or "I was sick and tired of it." Support from a husband or wife was important in sustaining the resolution.
Treatment of Drug Abuse and Addiction -- The Harvard Mental Health Letter, October 1995.

Many who have been told that they have the "disease" of alcoholism have taught themselves not to drink destructively, in fact, most have.

As for a cure to alcoholism, science has not found one yet. It is a disease just like any other. In response to another post, diabetes and heart condition you can not catch, but are still diseases. I am both a diabetic and an alcoholic and nobody on my mothers or fathers side of the family are diabetics or alcoholics. No, I am not adopted.

• “Hope, Faith & Courage” (HFC). A discussion meeting for addicts seeking recovery.

My name is Jon H. and I am a grateful recovering addict. Click on the above link or copy and paste it and then click on the Hope, Faith and Courage link. It is a discussion meeting for addicts seeking recovery. There are people there from Florida, South Africa, England, all over the globe recovering from an addiction of some type of drug, not just cocaine. They can also help you find local meetings in your area. The link below also you will find contact information all over the globe. There is recovery everywhere if you want it.

For the friends and family of alcoholics and addicts I would suggest to go to this link:

http://www.al-anon.alateen.org/

Prayers go out to all those who are still suffering. Also for the friends and families who have been affected by this disease. Yes it is a disease. I did go through a rehab, but I also had insurance at the time. I was caught at work.

Yes! There probably already is a cure. However, they probably wont ever release it to the public, because the system wants to keep those type problems constantly going to constantly make money for the system as in the court systems, police stations, bondman's services, community services,Insurances companys,ect.,ect.,ect., the list goes on and on! NOW!!!...Think about it!...is this beginning to make since if you think in the minds of the government, states, cites, politics,THE SYSTEM AS A HOLE!... it uses these unfortunate incidents as an opportunity to cash in and make money to keep the system going and running! The gov.,states, cites, county's use the these fees that are charged for hundreds of reasons...example: to fix roads, to build city buildings,ect.,ect.,ect.!!!!!! The system is designed to make money from you either by way of your mistakes, your misunderstandings of the written law of the land, your Miss-hap's,your negletcs, your needs, your wants...ECT.,ECT.,ECT.!!!!!! Think about all of the money "they make" (the system), just from people who drinks and drive and get caught and all the other things like drugs, ect.!!!!
References :
I don't believe there is a cure. Your will has to be strong. I don't this alcoholism is a disease (you can't catch it or give it to someone else) This is a self inflicted "disease" if you one still thinks it's a disease. I speak from personal experience...a few of my loved ones have suffered from their addiction for many years. God gave us all free will and you need to make the decision to abstain or give in to your weakness. As for a cure....well, don't drink! That's the cure. One has to do what is best for themselves in whatever path they choose...
References :
The only cure is to never again have a drink.

Everyones body reacts differently to all things and I think alcohol for some people is just a sort of a reaction similar to reactions people get from certain medications or certain foods. The only answer is to not have alcohol...not ever...your body can't effectively handle it.
References :
Its not really a disease. Sure, it is categorized as such and has many qualities that would put it with diseases, but it is actually created by the genes in your body. Genes control everything from what you think of someone's hair to how addictive you become to things including alcohol. A "cure"- no doubt in a century or so (probably sooner), scientists will find the specific gene that causes alcoholism and will be able to alter it in a way to stop it for good. Until then, good luck.
References :
Iowa State University Psych 235 course
