First of all, there is no cure for alcoholism or other addictions. Once an addict, always an addict. It is a matter of choice.

Some people find that they need help from something outside themselves to help make the choice. For some, that something is God. And for some, it is their own inner strength. Those who choose to believe that strength is God, want to share that experience with others, because it is their belief that if it helped them, it might help someone else too.

Often people involved in programs will choose to say that God is the one responsible for their recovery. But if you really look at those programs, you will find that they do not specify God is the answer. It is something higher than the individual that is the answer.

you have made a few good points. Especially the bit about preying on people at their lowest ebb.
I believe that they are easy targets for the god monsters because during their conversion, the blame for alcoholism is given to satan or demons posessing them and "turning them into" alcoholics thus, taking the blame away from themselves.
It must be a lot easier to blame demons for your failings than yourself.

No one (or very few) claim that God is essential. Having said that, more people have been set free from alcohol by religious conversion that any other single cause.

The exercises practised in Buddhism in order to conquer thoughts and actions are equally viable. This involves the destruction of the ego and a respect for all of creation. This can all be done without the necessity of a god. In other words, the individual takes full responsibility for the management of his thought and actions.

I have been a Christian for many years. I have been addicted to drugs (pain killers) during that time and I couldn't have gotten through it without God. NO WAY. I give all the glory to Him who has delivered me from the grips of bondage.

It is a step when you hit bottom to trun your life over to God cause you realize that your analytical mind and personal will can't get you where you know you need to go. Eventually God turns your life back over to you because you realize that you includes God.

Why do we need God to help us get rid of drugs and etc? Because we can not get free of our addictions without help, otherwise we wouldn't b addicted at first. We have no strenth to do by ourselves.

For people in such a bad rut, it often makes it easier to have someone stronger to lean on, rather than telling them "you have to do this yourself". Maybe having a support group would do that too, but maybe not because you that support group may not be able to be there for you 24/7. They have their own lives too.

Because overcoming hard stuff is easier with God by your side. It gives them a reason to live, a reason to come out of it. And then it gives them a reason to stay off it.
